LANCE ARMSTRONG FOUNDATION ADULT SURVIVORSHIP CLINIC
COMES TO NEW HAMPSHIRE
HOOKSETT, NH – "Cancer survivors have special needs as people, not just as patients” states Mr. Ronald Barkley, MS, JD, Executive Director at New Hampshire Oncology-Hematology , PA. “There exists a cancer care continuum for every patient that needs to be addressed – the conclusion of medical treatment does not have to mean the end of care.”
Where are you in the treatment of your cancer? If you have finished – or are close to completing – are you asking yourself, “what now?” You might find yourself facing a number of unexpected emotional, physical and practical concerns. According to the National Cancer Institute, the disease of cancer, which was “once almost uniformly fatal, has become for most people a chronic illness, and for growing numbers, a curable disease. Cancer survivors face issues such as maintaining optimal physical and mental health, preventing disability and late effects related to cancer and its treatment, and ensuring social and economic well-being for themselves and their families.”
Currently there is an expansive growth in terms of survivorship in cancer care. This new recognition of a “survivorship community” has generated a need for comprehensive care for cancer survivors.
New Hampshire Oncology-Hematology, a Dana-Farber Cancer Institute affiliate, has been designated to join the Lance Armstrong Survivorship Outreach Consortium in New England . This opportunity has resulted in a grant for survivorship services to be provided by the Perini Family Survivors' Center and the Lance Armstrong Foundation Adult Survivorship Clinic through the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston .
The community-based survivorship program is designed to include clinical, educational, and research components to improve the standards of care for the region's cancer survivors. Services to be available to our community include conferences to improve physician education in survivorship issues; consultations and referrals; community education programs on survivorship; and survivor clinical trials.
There are close to ten million cancer survivors in the United States today. With June officially designated as Cancer Survivors Month, it is the strength and perseverance of these individuals that serve as a reminder that we should not only be treating the disease, but the whole relationship – from initial diagnosis throughout the full continuum of their journey.
New Hampshire Oncology-Hematology is a regional medical oncology practice, serving patients and their families in Manchester , Concord , Laconia , Exeter and Derry , New Hampshire . For additional information on this and other programs at New Hampshire Oncology-Hematology, visit www.nhoh.com .
