Community Physicians Receive Accreditation to do Cancer Research

HOOKSETT, NH – New Hampshire Oncology-Hematology, PA, a community-based oncology practice, has received approval from the Board of Directors of the Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB) in Chicago to conduct cancer research as an at-large institution.

New Hampshire Oncology-Hematology, PA, has been active in areas of clinical research for more than 20 years, previously as an affiliate member of CALGB through Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. With this approval, the practice is qualified as an independent member of CALGB, and the only community-based practice in New Hampshire. As an at-large member, physicians of the group are eligible to participate in CALGB committees to develop new clinical protocols for many cancer diagnoses.

"We are excited about the continuing and improved opportunities this provides for our patients," said Douglas Weckstein, MD, a physician at New Hampshire Oncology-Hematology, PA, and the designated principal investigator. "Over the more than 25 years we have been providing cancer care in our community, our involvement in research has allowed our patients to benefit from clinical trials and other research without traveling long distances."

The CALGB is a national clinical research group sponsored by the National Cancer Institute. It was founded in 1955 with a goal of bringing together clinical oncologists and laboratory investigators to develop better treatments for cancer. Since then, CALGB has grown into a national network of 29 university medical centers, more than 185 community hospitals and about 3,000 physicians who collaborate in clinical research studies aimed at reducing the morbidity and mortality from cancer, relating the biological characteristics of cancer to clinical outcomes and developing new strategies for the prevention, early detection, and treatment of cancer.

"The availability of cutting edge clinical trials offers patients in our community the opportunity to receive promising treatments," Weckstein noted, "and provides them a chance to contribute to progress in the fight against cancer."

For more information about research being conducted by New Hampshire Oncology-Hematology, PA, contact the practice at 622-6484. New Hampshire Oncology-Hematology offers care for patients in greater Manchester, Concord, Exeter, Laconia and Derry.
