Regaining
Sexual Confidence After Cancer
Having cancer can affect every aspect of your life, including your
sexuality. Whether your treatment has entailed surgery, chemotherapy,
radiotherapy, or any combination of the three, there will be adjustments
to make as you recover. Remember that honest partner-to-partner
communication is essential to maintaining a strong, supportive relationship.
Be patient, be creative, and ask for advice when needed. The pleasure
of sexual closeness enhances quality of life and can be adapted
no matter what treatment has been used. After consulting your physician
or nurse about specific restrictions, use the following suggestions
to promote rehabilitation.
Before
you resume sexual activity:
- Focus
on your physical recovery first. Emphasize nutrition, rest, and
progressive activity. Include your partner in all discussions
about your care and treatment.
- Ask
your nurses how to obtain a copy of the booklet Sexuality &
Cancer, a publication
available from the American Cancer Society. Separate booklets
are published for men and women.
- Plan
to use appropriate birth control measures, if indicated.
- Report
any unusual bleeding, discharge, fever, or pain to your doctor
or nurse.
