My name is Ellen Kennedy. I live in Londonderry. I have two daughters. One just turned 21 and she’s in college, and my younger daughter is in high school and she will be 16 soon. We live with my mom and dad. My husband’s deceased.

I have ovarian cancer. I was diagnosed exactly five years ago last weekend. I started not feeling well in February and went to my own doctor and he found I had the flu. And, I finally went to my girls’ allergist because I thought I had asthma, it affected my breathing, and she did tests and x-rays and felt that we needed to pursue it further and sent me to one of her own doctors and that doctor, in turn, sent me to Lahey at Burlington and I was operated on down there – Dr. Robert McLellan, he’s the head of the Gynecology down there, operated on me. And, I was there 16 days and received my first chemo treatment there and then I was sent to New Hampshire Oncology.

They are absolutely wonderful. If you have to have treatment, that’s the place to go. The nurses are great. The doctors are awesome. My own doctor, Dr. Weckstein, has been wonderful. He’s very concerned about me as a person, not just the disease, and very interested in my family and what I do in my teaching, so it’s a complete treatment. I never dread going there. It’s one of those things, you know you have to go someplace and you have friends there. I’ve made a lot of friends – a lot of nurses – a lot of patients. I’ve done okay, considering how many different medicines I’ve tried. I could say I’ve only been sick once in the five years, which is very unusual. They’re very good at giving premeds so that you’re not ill. I’m apt to be tired, but you can deal with being tired.

I should tell you that I have several friends that have already been diagnosed that are going to New Hampshire Oncology that I work with at school. And we discuss the doctors and the treatment and who’s going when and oh, maybe we’ll go together or see each other up at the doctor’s office. We all feel the same way. If you have to be treated, that’s the place to go.

I was surprised that they really care about you as a person. They’re more of a friend, especially the nurses. They treat you like their friend. You know about their families. You know what’s going on in their lives and they know about yours and they’re very concerned about that.

I ended up in the Emergency Room a couple of weeks ago. I had a virus and didn’t know it. And, Dr. Hammond, the head doctor, was on call and I called him and he said, "You need to go to the Emergency Room." So, he called me back in a few minutes and he said, "I will meet you there." That’s very unusual for a doctor to do. And, when we got there, he already had planned what he wanted done. He came in and sat with my in the x-ray room, introduced himself, sat and talked to me, and spent the entire time that I was there with me. He was awesome.
