Our
Practice
At
New Hampshire Oncology-Hematology, PA, we strive to provide each
of our patients with the best medical care available for cancers
and diseases of the blood. Please take a minute to read our full
"Mission and Values Statement".
It was written in collaboration with all the departments of our
practice. We try to live by it every day.
Dr.
A. Collier Smyth started New Hampshire Oncology-Hematology, PA (NHOH)
in 1976. Dr. Smyth was the first board-certified oncologist in community
practice in New Hampshire, and he trained at the National Cancer
Institute. His vision was to bring world-class oncology and hematology
care to New Hampshire. Over the subsequent 28 years that NHOH has
been in existence, we have pursued the very same goal he set for
the practice. Every person is committed to providing our patients
with expert and compassionate care.
The
task of caring for individuals with serious and complex illnesses
cannot be accomplished by any individual alone, but rather requires
the teamwork of many different individuals. Each of these team members
has a different area of expertise necessary to ensure the highest
quality care for our patients. Our team now consists of nearly 100
employees, including nine board-certified or board-eligible oncologists/hematologists.
Additionally, we serve our patients from five locations throughout
New Hampshire. As you look at the Staff
section of our website you will see the faces of some of these dedicated
individuals.
Here
at NHOH we are involved in the medical treatment of cancers, as
well as the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the blood. We
provide care for adults, as oncology and hematology care for children
is a separate discipline. Specially trained nurses at each of our
five practice locations administer
chemotherapy and other types of anti-cancer medicines. All medications
are stored and prepared in accordance with the strictest governmental
and professional standards.
Our
practice serves communities in New Hampshire at five different locations.
The Hooksett location is a private free-standing office, which serves
patients in greater Manchester. In Concord, our practice is private
office space, located within the Payson Center for Cancer Care on
the Concord Hospital campus. In these two offices, staff and physicians
are employed by NHOH. Our Laconia, Exeter and Derry offices, which
support patients in each of those communities and surrounding areas
respectively, are based within hospitals. At those offices, our
physicians and hospital staffs are integrated in caring for patients.
The
care of the patient with cancers or diseases of the blood usually
requires the coordination of treatment planning among many different
physicians and institutions. At NHOH, we work closely with surgeons,
radiation oncologists, and primary care physicians locally, as well
as nationally. We have a close collaborative relationship with our
community hospitals and the Harvard hospitals. The information in
our patient records is maintained in our offices and released to
others in accordance with the strict Federal Privacy Laws (HIPAA)
that govern this part of medical practice. A more complete explanation
of this subject can be found in the section of the website entitled,
Privacy Statement.
In
order to bring the most up to date care to our patients, we have
a vigorous clinical research program at all of the NHOH practice
sites. A full discussion of the meaning of clinical research, as
well as the types of studies we are conducting, can be found in
the section of our website entitled, Research.
As
hematologists, it is important that we personally examine our patients
blood under the microscope. For the convenience of our patients
we have a full-service, nationally accredited laboratory in each
of our offices. These laboratories not only perform hematology tests,
but also the full range of standard blood testing.
Individuals
and families coping with serious medical illnesses are naturally
under a great deal of stress. The psychological, social, and spiritual
strains that these diseases create are enormous. Assisting our patients
with these issues is critical to the mission of NHOH. InnisfreeCancerHelp.org
provides a comprehensive list of community resources that assist
patients and families dealing with these problems. In addition,
each of our practice sites has a library providing printed materials
on a variety of cancer-related topics. Throughout the year, support
groups and other activities are offered in the communities where
we practice.
The
availability of the highest level of medical care is not only a
function of the expertise and resources that we have at NHOH, but
is also related to the laws, regulations and insurance policies
that govern these activities. NHOH tries to play an active role
in all these areas, to ensure that our patients will have access
to the highest quality care. More on this subject can be seen in
the section of the website entitled, Cancer
Care Public Policy.
Every
day each of the members of the New Hampshire Oncology-Hematology,
PA team works to improve the health of our patients and their families.
We pursue that goal in many different ways. We hope that the other
sections of this website will give you more information about the
many resources NHOH has available to help individuals and families
cope with cancer or blood diseases. Each of us has a personal stake
in the health of our patients; we know that at any time we, too,
could be patients at NHOH.
We
wish you the best of health and life.
